SIGNS, SYMBOLS & ABBREVIATIONS For the American Dairy Goat Association

We all at times have tried to read the information on registration papers and tried to figure out what all those funny terms and symbols mean. Below is a list of some of the more common ones:

CH - a permanent champion of record

GCH - Same as above, Also has an Advanced Registry of Star Milker record

*M - Indicates the doe has an official milk record

**M - (or any number of stars) indicates the number of the AR volume (ADGA Handbook) where the last record of the animal is found.

ST - (with a number following) indicates the handbook where the lastest star record is found

*B - indicates a buck that has a Dam with official milk records, and a Sire that has either a Dam with offcial milk records or three offspring with official records.

+B - a buck that has (1) three or more Advanced Registry or Star Milker daughters, or (2) two or more sons are Advanced Registry.

++B - a buck listed in the Advanced Registry because he has at least three daughters that are in the Advanced Registry or has earned stars and 2 or more sons that are + bucks.

2-08 AR5601 305 1719 60 3.5 means that the animal's Advanced Registry number for this particular lactation is 5601: the record at 2 years and 8 months of age the was for 305 days, she produced 1790 lbs of milk and of total of 60 lbs of butterfat testing at 3.5%

BBIS - Best Buck in Show

BDIS - Best Doe in Show

BIS - Best in Show

BOB - Best of Breed

BUOS - Best Udder of Show

CHC - Champion Challenge

DHIR - Dairy Herd Improvement Record

DHIA - Dairy Herd Improvement Association

NOA - Native on Appearance-a doe recorded on conformation to a breed standard

NOP - Native on performance- a doe who produced on an official test perscribed amound of milk for recordation purposes.
